Wendy Corbett
Although Wendy studied art to ‘A’ level standard she confesses she never really considered it as a career option as her driving ambition was to work with animals. However, as a youngster Wendy was discouraged by teachers from doing this, who suggested that she think of a ‘real’ job instead, which led to her becoming a teacher. This job was unfortunately not suited to Wendy at all and subsequently she left with absolutely no idea what she was going to do
Over a period of time Wendy tried her hand at a variety of jobs ranging from farming to forklift truck driving with no real sense of direction. In her late 30’s she began working with her father as a sign writer and lettering artist which she pursued for a number of years, until computers and modern technology, as with several other professions, did her out of a job. Again she had to think which career path she wanted to take. She had been experimenting with art in any spare time that she had, doing animal portraiture commissions and trying out various different mediums and techniques.
It had also long been a dream of Wendy’s to live by the coast and she made a spur of the moment decision to move to Devon, with the intention of one day becoming a full-time artist.
Wendy’s real opportunity happened when she began working as a framer for the Mayne Gallery and, once the owners had seen some samples of her work, was encouraged by them to continue painting and drawing. She was delighted when Mayne Gallery then took some pieces to put up for sale and promised to help her achieve her dream of becoming a full time, professional artist. This was Wendy’s debut as a professional artist and since then has gone on to become very successful.
