South Devon Celebrates Queen’s 90th In Style

Holidaymakers who were looking for things to do in Devon to celebrate the Queens 90th birthday over the weekend were certainly not disappointed, as the region put on a variety of events in honour of Her Royal Majesty.

Those in Newton Abbot were certainly in for a treat, as Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday coincided with the Devon Transport Week.

What’s more it was the Community Transport’s silver jubilee, so visitors were able to enjoy free journeys to Courtenay Street on Saturday (June 11th).

On the same day, there was an afternoon dance performance from the Music Mill, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Sunday saw plenty of Royal supporters and families turn up at Courtenay Park where they entertained themselves at the Tea in the Park festival.

Those who attended enjoyed live music from Bay Brass, while they also got to marvel at the Newton Bushell Morris dancers.

It was definitely a family day out, with plenty of activities put on for little ones, including pony rides, balloon modelling, face painting and fairground rides.

Some people really got into the spirit of things and dressed up along the theme of ‘through the ages’, while others enjoyed the traditionally English treats served at the Pimms tent.

Though the Queen’s actual 90th birthday was on April 21st, this weekend marks her official royal birthday celebrations.

Not only did South Devon – along with the rest of the country – mark the milestone birthday, but last year also represented Queen Elizabeth II becoming the longest reigning British monarch.

Queen Victoria, her great-great-grandmother, previously held the title, reigning Britain for 63 years and seven months, but in September 2015, Queen Elizabeth II surpassed this impressive achievement.

Those who are in South Devon for the royal celebrations might be interested in popping into Mayne Gallery, home to a vast collection of modern and classic art from the UK and all over the world.
