Having enjoyed an extensive career in design, Philip now devotes his time to making sculpture. Specialising in sandcasting, Philip creates sculptures that engage the quality of bronze as a noble material in its own right. He is intrigued by the surface and the alchemy of patination that gives rise to eclectic possibilities and unpredictable outcomes. The colouring is not a surface coating: It is fundamental - it is the surface. There are no big ideas to express, it is visual and the simplicity of shape that is all-absorbing. Objects are exciting, intriguing and tactile. Process, erosion, nature and time all have a part to play. Inspiration is everywhere and often in the most surprising places. There is always a personal story to Philip's works and yet it is still important to this artist that each piece engages the imagination of the onlooker, connecting with an instinctive appreciation of simple, universal forms that underpin his inspiration.
