Dale Bowen was born in Staffordshire in 1963, where he continues to live and work. With a passion for art from an early age, he went on to study at Newcastle-under-Lyme College.
A master potter by trade, Bowen spent over 20 years in the ceramics industry, working first for Coalport China and later for Wedgwood. As part of Wedgwood’s prestigious department, he created exceptional one-off pieces for collectors and private commissions, many of which were highly decorative, exclusive works achieving values in excess of £100,000.
He later completed a Master’s degree in Ceramics at Staffordshire University and has exhibited internationally, including in New York, Washington and San Francisco. His work has also featured in an exclusive Wedgwood collection in Japan.
Notable commissions include a piece for Coalport’s 250th anniversary, work celebrating the Queen Mother’s 100th birthday, and pieces marking the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar—one of which was presented to Her Majesty aboard HMS Victory.
“Creativity comes from a number of different sources—observation or even conversation. Inspiration always surprises me in the ever unusual ways it catches me.
Although I have worked in the pottery industry for so long, it is painting that remains my first love and continually draws me back to canvas.
The creative process is self-propelling and at times all-consuming; it comes in waves and has forever changed the way I see the world around me.”
Bowen’s playful original paintings are rich in colour and texture, appealing to both adults and children alike. His vibrant, whimsical landscapes are filled with hidden details—animals, people and vehicles—while the humorous titles reflect his affection for each scene.
His work is collected across the country, with each piece conveying a genuine sense of joy—both in its creation and for those who come to own it.
