Local Stokenham based artist Helena Clews has exhibited across the UK and her work is held in many private collections. She studied for her BA in Fine Art at Manchester Metropolitan University and graduated with both First Class Honours and the Ken Billany prize in 2007. She then continued her practice and studies in London and graduated with MA Fine Art, Merit from Central Saint Martins. She then decided to leave her North London studio to fulfill her dream to move to Devon and paint by the sea where she now paints and exhibits.
Helena’s practice explores the possibilities of painting in the liminal space between abstraction and representation, constantly intrigued by how visual information – such as colour and gestural mark making – can allude to something that is difficult to define or identify clearly as a particular thing in the world, whilst at the same time being recognisable aesthetically as an ‘abstract’ painting. Since moving to Devon, the beautiful Devon landscapes and colours have influenced Helena’s work and her paintings continue to reflect the changes in her surroundings and she now paints on the line between landscape painting and the suggestion of a landscape or particular viewpoint. Helena is ceaselessly inspired by the sea, the light and beauty of Devon.
