John Horsewell was born in 1956 on the borders of London and Essex. Raised in a family of professional artists, including his father, Ron Horsewell, he developed a natural affinity for painting from an early age.
After studying art, Horsewell began his professional career with a style that initially reflected his father’s influence. Over time, however, he established a distinctive artistic identity of his own. His atmospheric landscapes and coastal scenes combine expressive, impressionistic freedom with a gentle palette and carefully observed detail.
Echoes of John Haskins and Victorian watercolourist Myles Birket Foster can be found in Horsewell’s work, yet his skilful handling of colour, light and texture gives each painting an unmistakable character.
