This May, Mayne Gallery presents ELEMENTAL — a compelling new exhibition featuring the work of Lucy Young, Tess Armitage, and Shaunna Hubbard. United by their intuitive connection to nature, these three women artists offer distinct yet harmonious perspectives on our emotional and elemental ties to the natural world.
Through aerial seascapes, windswept landscapes, and solitary swimmers, ELEMENTAL explores how light, water, earth, and air shape not only the world around us — but also our inner states of being.
Lucy Young – Breath of Life
British artist Lucy Young invites us to rise above the shoreline and view the world from an expansive, serene perspective. Her aerial seascapes blend oceanic tones with exquisite subtlety, distilling the coastline into moments of stillness, space, and light.
Each canvas is a portal — a peaceful, weightless perspective of the sea that offers collectors an instinctive, heart-led connection. “You should choose artworks which make your heart skip a beat,” Lucy says. “Then placing the painting into your home brings with it so much more than a piece of art, but a daily window to your heart.”
Her new collection, Breath of Life, captures this ethos with clarity and calm — seascapes that are more than visual; they are emotional atmospheres.
Tess Armitage – Energy of the Outdoors
With roots on the edge of Exmoor and a life-long love of untamed places, Tess Armitage paints with the raw energy of the elements themselves. Her oil paintings are alive with movement — built up with brushstrokes, palette knife scrapes, and layered textures that reflect the sensory experience of the wild outdoors she adores.
From coastal breezes to open moors, Tess’s creative process begins outdoors: walking, feeling, listening. Only then does she return to the studio to pour those elemental memories onto the canvas.
There’s a feeling of being both lost and found in her work — as if the paintings themselves are breathing.
Shaunna Hubbard – Wild Swimmers
Shaunna Hubbard’s art is a vivid celebration of colour, nostalgia, and emotional presence. Based in Newquay, Cornwall, and deeply inspired by the Atlantic coastline, her paintings exude a sense of escapism and mindful joy. Her much-loved Wild Swimmer series invites us to step into jewel-toned waters and simply be.
Always looking away from the viewer, Shaunna’s swimmers allow us to see ourselves in their place — wading into serenity, solitude, and self-reflection. With influences ranging from mythology and fashion to holiday culture and wellbeing, her work is both glamorous and grounded.
A rising voice in contemporary art, Shaunna has been featured in British Vogue and House & Garden, and brings a fresh, uplifting narrative to the exhibition.
