RESONANCE - where two different voices echo the same land

This summer, Mayne Gallery presents Resonance — an exhibition that brings together the strikingly different yet deeply complementary visions of two artists, both inspired by the British landscape.

John Donaldson, now in his 80s, has spent a lifetime immersed in the changing light and elemental weather of Devon, France, and beyond. His paintings are lyrical, expressive, and alive with movement — guided by instinct, memory, and atmosphere. Through a palette shaped by decades of exploration, John captures not only place but also presence — the feeling of being within the land, not merely observing it.

Polly Luce, a rising voice in contemporary landscape painting, offers a meditative counterbalance. Her paintings are quiet and minimal, composed in delicate layers of colour and form. A self-taught painter with a background in art history, Polly creates dreamlike semi-abstract landscapes that evoke stillness and space. Though now based in North Somerset, she grew up in Devon and retains a deep connection to the land — its colours, contours, and quiet energy continue to shape her work. With family still in the region, Polly’s paintings are as much a return as they are a reflection.

Together, Donaldson and Luce offer two distinct voices in conversation — one bold and gestural, the other subtle and serene. Resonance is not only about contrast, but also about connection. Both artists are moved by the rhythms of the natural world, the emotional weight of place, and the timeless pull of landscape as muse.

The exhibition opens in the gallery on Saturday 28th June 2025, but an exclusive 24-hour online preview will be available the day before — Friday 27th June — only to those who sign up in advance. Join our preview list to be among the first to explore this evocative collection from the comfort of your home.

We invite collectors, art lovers, and those drawn to the soul of the land to experience this unique pairing — an exhibition that speaks in two tones, yet echoes with one shared reverence.
